Neighbourhood GuidesMarda Loop is in one of its “okay, so what are we tearing up… and then rebuilding… again?” eras. But honestly? The neighbourhood keeps leveling up in a way that makes living here stupidly convenient.
Here’s the real update — the stuff I actually notice wandering between showings, grabbing coffee, or trying to get across 33rd without rage-driving.
1. The Food + Coffee Scene Keeps Upgrading
A couple of new spots have arrived, and some OGs are feeling like they finally got their groove back now that the worst of the construction chaos has calmed down.
- Sugar Stream is the new kid on 33rd — boutique bakery, viral desserts, and very “grab something pretty and wander the neighbourhood” energy.
- Sammie Cafe is still the Marda Loop brunch problem. Crispy edges, ridiculous bennies, and the kind of sandwiches that ruin you for basic brunch forever.
- Village Ice Cream (Garrison Corner) feels like an extension of everyone’s living room again — lineups, kids with cones, and that “okay fine, I’ll get a pint to take home” moment.
- Bells Café / Aroma / Deville keep the everyday coffee situation easy — laptop spots, quick grab-and-go, and enough options that you can pretend you’re a coffee snob even if you’re not.
- Doughnut Party and Wow Bakery mean you’re basically surrounded by carbs at all times, which I’m counting as a feature, not a bug.
If you haven’t done a full “loop of the Loop” in a while — coffee, bakery, ice cream, repeat — it’s worth it. The vibe is back.
2. The Streetscape Is… Slowly Becoming Hot Again
Yes, yes — construction. Marda Loop’s love language. But the payoff is starting to show:
- Better walkability and fewer “am I allowed to cross here or will I die?” corners.
- Patios you can actually sit on without inhaling dust and gravel.
- Crosswalks and curb cuts that make it less of a workout if you’re pushing a stroller or hauling groceries.
- A tiny bit more space for pedestrians who are just vibing, not training for a race.
It’s not perfect, but it’s trending in the right direction — which, for Calgary urban planning, deserves at least a slow clap.
3. The Retail Shuffle Is REAL
If you’ve been here a minute, you know Marda Loop goes through personality changes every few years. It’s giving: boutiques → gyms → restaurants → wellness → repeat.
Right now, it feels more curated and less “every landlord is panicking.” A few standouts:
- Local boutiques with actual personality — not just fast fashion and sad hangers.
- Beauty + wellness studios everywhere. Honestly, Marda Loop might be single-handedly holding up Calgary’s lash lift and balayage economy.
- Specialty food spots (cheese boards, dessert bars, bakeries) that make it dangerously easy to “just pop out for one thing” and come home with half a charcuterie board.
4. The Vibe Shift: More Walkers, Less Traffic Trolls
People are actually walking again. Dogs everywhere. Strollers everywhere. Sneakers that cost more than my first car? Also everywhere.
It feels a little more European-ish (Calgary’s version, obviously) and a little less like a suburb trapped in a midlife crisis. You can grab a coffee, wander, window-shop, and actually run into people you know — in a good way.
5. Should You Live Here? (If We’re Being Honest…)
If you want:
- Walkability
- Local everything
- Easy coffee and absurd amounts of dessert
- Zero corporate energy
- A neighbourhood that feels alive but not full downtown chaos
…Marda Loop is kind of unmatched.
Is it a bit chaotic? Yes. Is it worth it? Also yes.
If you’re into real, slightly spicy takes on Calgary — welcome to The Underhill Edit.
This is where Stacy and I share the stuff we actually see living, working, eating, walking, and dodging detours around inner-city Calgary.
More neighbourhood deep dives coming. More real estate (but not boring). More life stuff. More personality. Less corporate fluff.
Stay tuned — and if you want me to review a specific neighbourhood next, tell me.
